Hunters Advised to Buy Deer Tags Early to Avoid Furlough Office Closures

Hunters interested in purchasing 2010 “A Zone” deer tags must do so by Thursday, Aug. 12 in order to hunt on opening day, Aug. 14.
Although sales are typically brisk the Friday before the deer season begins, hunters who wait until Aug. 13 this year will not be able to purchase tags. On July 28, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger reinstated state office furlough days on the second, third and fourth Friday of each month, resulting in the closure of all Department of Fish and Game (DFG) offices on those days.
Deer tags can only be purchased in person at DFG's regional offices and the DFG License and Revenue Branch in Sacramento (all of which will be closed on furlough days), or through the mail. Offices are otherwise open during normal business hours, Monday through Friday. A list of DFG license sales offices can be found at www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing/officelocation.html.
California residents must have both a resident hunting license and a valid deer zone tag in order to hunt deer in any zone. The A Zone is the largest deer hunting zone in the state, with 65,000 tags allotted for the 2010 season.
A resident hunting license currently costs $41.50, a resident First-Deer Tag Application is $27.85 and a resident Second-Deer Tag Application costs $34.65.
