PIERRE, S.D. –The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission has decided to increase the number of Special Buck licenses available for the 2010 firearms deer season.

The action will provide 500 Special Buck licenses to resident East River firearms deer hunters.  The move will equalize the allocation of licenses available to residents for both West River and East River Deer Seasons and help address the demand for those licenses for the East River Season.

Special Buck licenses are good only on private land.

The Commission has also adopted new federal regulations from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on the practice of falconry.  By 2014, all states must comply with federal regulations and have state falconry programs approved.  States that do not have approved programs by then will not be able to permit falconers, and falconry could not be legally practiced in those states.

The regulations do not expand the number of raptors that can be taken, but will expand the take season for raptors, as well as transferring administrative duties to the state Game, Fish and Parks Department. It would no longer be necessary for falconers to get federal permits to practice falconry.

The new falconry standards can be downloaded at http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov .
