A 16-year-old West Newfield boy suffered a gunshot wound to his middle toe on his right foot while tracking the first deer he had ever shot.

William Tarbox had shot a spikehorn buck and was following its blood trail when he shot himself in the foot at approximately 11:30 a.m. today (Nov. 4, 2008) in the Newfield area. He was transported by ambulance to Maine Medical Center.

This incident is the fifth hunting-related shooting incident since Oct. 8, which was during waterfowl season. Deer season for residents started Nov. 1 and Nov. 3 for all hunters.

The incident is under investigation.
