SALEM, Ore.—The deadline to purchase Western Oregon deer centerfire, black bear, and cougar tags is Friday, Oct. 3 at midnight.

Lines tend to be long on deadline day, so get to an ODFW office or point-of-sale agent sooner rather than later. Remember that while ODFW’s point-of-sale system no longer shuts down at 11 p.m., many stores close well before that hour. Even stores open 24 hours may not have staff available to do license sales at odd hours. Stores have also been known to stop accepting customers because of long lines.

Licensing staff also recommend you double-check your tag before leaving the shop to confirm you purchased the right one, especially if you are getting a controlled (limited-entry) hunt tag. Remember the deadline to purchase a controlled hunt tag is the day before the hunt period begins.

Other important general season tag purchase deadlines to remember are:

    * Cascade elk centerfire (limited open area) – Oct. 17
    * Rocky Mt elk centerfire, first season – Oct. 28
    * Rocky Mt elk centerfire, second season – Nov. 7
    * Coast elk centerfire, first season – Nov. 14
    * Coast elk centerfire, second season – Nov. 21

Pick up NW Oregon Goose Permit at POS location

New this year, Northwest Oregon Zone goose hunters will no longer be mailed their permits prior to the season but must pick one up from any point-of-sale agent or ODFW office that sells tags. A $1.50 agent fee will apply.

Hunters must take a goose identification test to get this required permit to hunt in the Northwest Oregon General and Northwest Oregon Permit Zones, a 13-county area stretching from the coast to the Cascades down to Lane County. The purpose of the permit is to minimize the harvest of sensitive dusky Canada geese, which can look similar to other Canada geese.

The fall goose hunting season begins Oct. 18 in the NW Permit Zone and Oct. 11 in the NW General Zone and most other parts of the state. Tags can be picked up anytime prior to hunting.

Western Oregon deer season opens Oct. 4. Cougar and bear hunting opened Aug. 1 statewide.
