2008 Opening Day Deer Hunting Report
Nov. 22, 2008MADISON-Cold, but nearly ideal hunting conditions – except for a lack of tracking snow in most of the state – greeted hunters for the opening of the 2008 Wisconsin regular nine-day deer hunting season. Temperatures were below zero in northern Wisconsin when the season opened at 30 minutes before sunrise Saturday. But temperatures warmed throughout the day and most areas of the state reported it was a near ideal opening day.
SPOONER Wis. - State wildlife staff are again monitoring the effects of winter on the state?s northern deer herd using as system known as the Winter Severity Index - and so far things look pretty good. The index uses a combination and accumulation of cold temperatures and deep snows that historically have proven to affect the health and population of deer.

Wisconsin?s regular nine-day gun deer hunting season opens Saturday, Nov. 20 and runs through Sunday, Nov. 28. MADISON - The first week of Operation Deer Watch, a program that asks citizens to report deer observations during the months of August and September, produced 818 observation reports, filed by 420 individuals, according to Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologists monitoring the program.

Archery buck harvest up 19 percent MADISON - Hunters registered 329,103 deer for the 2009 deer hunting seasons. This includes a total antlerless harvest of 191,715 and antlered (buck) harvest of 134,156. The grand total includes 3,232 deer recorded as unknown.
