WANTED: Owners of West Virginia Big Bucks - Aug. 02, 2010The West Virginia Wildlife Federation, the Division of Natural Resources and Toyota are seeking hunters who own trophy white-tailed bucks that were legally taken in West Virginia with either bow or gun and have a Pope & Young or Boone and Crockett score of 150 or greater.
Sixteen Additional Deer Test Positive for Chronic Wasting Disease in Hampshire County, West Virginia - Jan. 15, 2010
Preliminary test results indicate the Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) agent was present in 16 hunter-harvested deer collected in Hampshire County during the 2009 deer firearms hunting season.
West Virginia Hunters Harvest 154,524 Deer in 2009 - Jan. 14, 2010
Preliminary counts of game checking tags indicate West Virginia hunters harvested a total of 154,524 white-tailed deer during the recently completed bucks-only, antlerless, muzzleloader, archery and youth/Class Q deer seasons, according to West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Director Frank Jezioro. This year?s total harvest was 5.5 percent below the 2008 deer harvest of 163,603. Hunters killed a total of 63,590 bucks during the firearms deer season, 54,617 antlerless-season deer, 27,558 archery-season deer and 8,759 muzzleloader-season deer during the 2009 deer hunting seasons.
GOVERNOR'S ONE SHOT WHITETAIL DEER HUNT EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS FOR DONATIONS FOR HUNTERS HELPING THE HUNGRY PROGRAM - Dec. 23, 2009
CHARLESTON, W.Va. ? Preliminary figures for the recent Governor?s One Shot Whitetail Deer Hunt show that the event grossed more than $73,000, according to Gov. Joe Manchin. The event, held Dec. 6 and 7 at Stonewall Resort State Park in Lewis County, has been held the past three years to raise money for the Division of Natural Resources? Hunters Helping the Hungry program (HHH). After expenses are deducted, DNR estimates that this year?s One Shot event will be able to donate in excess of $50,000 to HHH. The first event in 2007 raised $17,000 and the second in 2008 raised $35,000.
Deer Hunters in West Virginia Harvest 62,491 Bucks during the Buck Firearms Season - Dec. 14, 2009
Preliminary data collected from game checking stations across the state indicate deer hunters in West Virginia harvested 62,491 bucks during the two-week buck firearms season, which ran from Nov. 23 through Dec. 5, according to Division of Natural Resources Director Frank Jezioro. The 2009 buck harvest was 7 percent less than the 2008 harvest of 67,365. The top ten counties for buck harvest were as follows: Jackson (2,493), Lewis (2,215), Preston (2,123), Roane (2,116), Mason (2,105), Ritchie (1,979), Braxton (1,896), Randolph (1,896), Greenbrier (1,896) and Wood (1,853).
Purchase Additional Muzzleloader Deer Hunting Stamps (Class RM/RRM) Prior to Muzzleloader Deer Season Dec. 14 - Dec. 01, 2009
The traditional muzzleloader deer hunting season opens Dec. 14 and runs through Dec. 19, 2009, in all West Virginia counties open to buck firearm hunting. During the muzzleloader season, properly licensed hunters may take a deer of either sex in counties or portions of counties that are open to antlerless deer hunting.
2009 West Virginia Deer Gun Seasons Fact Sheet - Nov. 16, 2009
The West Virginia firearm buck gun season is Nov. 23 ? Dec. 5. It is open in all counties except Logan, Mingo, McDowell and Wyoming.
Additional Deer (RG & RRG) Stamps Must Be Purchased Prior to the November 23 Buck Firearms Season Opening Date - Nov. 10, 2009
Hunters are reminded that the additional firearms deer gun stamp (Class RG - Resident; or Class RRG - Nonresident) for taking an additional deer during the buck firearms season must be purchased prior to November 23, 2009, according to Curtis Taylor, Chief of the Wildlife Resources Section of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.
