$10,000 PENALTY ISSUED IN TROPHY DEER POACHING CASE - Aug. 26, 2009HOBBS -- A Hobbs magistrate ordered aan convicted of poaching a trophy mule deer to pay the state $10,000 in civil damages, the maximum penalty under a 3-year-old law that allows the state to seek reimbursement for the loss of a trophy game animal.

SANTA FE -- More than 1,700 New Mexico public-land deer permits, 20 elk licenses for mobility impaired hunters, and 231 Javelina licenses leftover from the 2009-2010 drawing will be available beginning at 10 a.m. Aug. 19 -- only on the Department of Game and Fish Web site.

SANTA FE -- The Department of Game and Fish is asking for public comments about proposals to change the way hunters apply for deer licenses. The State Game Commission will consider the proposals at its Sept. 24 meeting in Las Cruces.

FORT SUMNER -- A Fort Sumner man was sentenced to 57 days in jail and ordered to pay $2,225 in fines and court costs after he pleaded guilty to five wildlife-related charges, including the poaching of a near state-record white-tailed deer.
