Deer Harvest Continues to Climb in West-Central Montana

Deer harvest started out slow this year in west-central Montana, but after three weeks of big game rifle season, white-tailed deer harvest is ahead of last year at this time and right in line with the five-year average.

To protect Montana's deer and elk from the impending threat of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks no longer accepts, holds, or rehabilitates deer and elk. FWP Region One Warden Captain Lee Anderson says that this policy is necessary because an infected animal housed at FWP's rehabilitation center (or any holding facility) could spread CWD from there back into the wild.

BILLINGS -- Hunters experienced some more warm temperatures during the third weekend of Montana's 2008 general big game season. Although the number of hunters who stopped at Fish, Wildlife and Parks check stations in south central Montana was 43 percent higher last weekend than in 2007, only 39.6 percent were successful.

Opener Very Slow In Northwest Montana - Oct. 27, 2008
Hunters took to the field yesterday across northwest Montana for the opener of the general deer and elk season. At the six northwest Montana check stations, a total of 2,873 hunters checked 80 white-tailed deer, 19 mule deer, and 15 elk for a 4.0 percent rate of hunters with game.
