Maryland Deer Test Negative For Chronic Wasting Disease

Annapolis, Md. - Recent laboratory test results confirmed no evidence of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in Maryland's deer herd. Brain and lymph node tissue samples collected from 996 deer during the 2008-2009 Maryland Deer Hunting Season revealed no signs of the disease. Additional samples collected from sick or injured deer also showed no signs of the disease. Since 2002, over 5,600 Maryland deer have been tested and confirmed as CWD-free.

Maryland White-Tailed Deer Tests Positive for CWD - Feb. 23, 2011
RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 23, 2011) - The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is alerting citizens that a white-tailed deer in Maryland has tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). As a result, North Carolina taxidermists can no longer accept full heads for mounts from Maryland and must inform wildlife officers if they receive one.

DNR Announces Deer Season Harvest For 2010-11 - Feb. 14, 2011
Annapolis, Md. (February 14, 2011) - Maryland deer hunters harvested a total of 98,663 deer during the 2010-2011 bow, muzzleloader and firearm seasons combined. This figure is down just 2 percent from last year's record harvest of 100,663 deer. The antlered harvest declined 1 percent to 33,341 deer this year, while the antlerless harvest decreased 2 percent to 65,322 deer. The harvest totals include 2,780 sika deer; a 17 percent increase over last year's total for this species.

Chronic Wasting Disease Found In A White-Tailed Deer In Maryland - Feb. 11, 2011
Annapolis, Md. (February 10, 2011) ? The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) received laboratory confirmation on February 10, 2011 that a white-tailed deer harvested in Maryland tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD). This is the first confirmed case of CWD in Maryland. A hunter in Allegany County reported taking the deer on November 27, 2010 in Green Ridge State Forest. Maryland joins 20 other states and Canadian provinces with CWD documented in deer, elk or moose.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Maryland Park Service announced the 2010-2011 dates for archery and firearms deer hunts at Wye Island Natural Resources Management Area (NRMA). As in the past, all hunts will be by permit only.

White-Tailed Deer Season Reopens In 21 Maryland Counties - Dec. 28, 2009
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (December 29, 2009) - Maryland's Firearm Deer Season will reopen for white-tailed deer on January 8 and 9 in Deer Management Region B. This two-day deer season provides additional opportunities for landowners to manage deer numbers, while offering hunters a late season recreational opportunity. The firearm season is closed in Deer Management Region A (Allegany and Garrett counties) and the sika deer firearm season is closed as well.
